This is the first time for about 10 years that a full dress rehearsal has been held in order to update the photo portfolio. We took over 2000 images at the dress and are busy working through them now for Carolina Ballet to use in future publicity materials. Due to popular demand here's a few preview shots for viewing over the Christmas holiday.
The scan quality is not so great, but I can assure you the actual calendar looks good. Insect photography is a keen interest of mine since student days. From left to right the bugs are: a Swamp Cicada, a Blue Dasher Dragonfly and a Scaly Bee Fly. All three were photographed in my garden in North Carolina.

This is the result of the calendar competion held annually in September by MyFour Thirds, the photographic community for four thirds camera users.

I shot the March image on the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley National Park, California. I was lucky to be there on an evening with quite a dramatic threatening sky. A memorable location for sure and definitely on my list of places to revisit. The December image is a collection of skeletonized leaves collected from my garden, photographed backlit on an old slide sorting table.

Marcelo Martinez as Count Dracula and Lilyan Vigo as Lucy

This wonderful presentation includes a live orchestra conducted by Alfred Sturgis using original score by local composer Mark Scearce and narration by Tony Award nominee Alan Campbell who plays the role of Dr Steward. Not an easy dress rehearsal to shoot (you know what black on black looks like!), so a lot of high ISO shots pushing the limits of Olympus SLR's (thank goodness for Noise Ninja software!). Despite the low light for good photography, I must congratulate Ross Kolman on his excellent lighting design using dramatic lighting and video effects. Here's some shots to whet your appetite and do make the time to take in a performance, you will enjoy it!
The well known Shakespeare tragedy is set to the beloved and well music of Sergei Prokofiev. Carolina Ballet's presentation choreographed by Robert Weiss is stunning with a large cast, superb costumes and Margeret Severin-Hanson and Marcelo Martinez wonderfully portray the characters of the archetypal young lovers. Performances start tonight and run through until May 9th. Enjoy these preview pictures and don't miss the real thing!
This particular version was by the Danish balletmaster August Bournonville (1805-1879). There's still a chance to see the ballet this weekend at the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, Raleigh, North Carolina. The last show is on 4 April. Here's a flavour of the images I took using an Olympus E-3 SLR with a 35-100m f2 lens - superb for low light conditions.
The streets were quiet and the shutters drawn against the pending cold evening air, or was it more than the cold that emptied the streets at such an early hour? Strangely, not a soul was to be seen....I was alone. Undeterred, I continued through the cobble streets drawn to the ruin of the famed Burg Frankenstein nestling on a hilltop overlooking the village. The castle dates back to 1100, with its origins as a monastery before becoming Castle Frankenstein in 1390. Suffering the struggles to control the region , the castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times during endless strife between rival Lords, the Thirty Year Wars and the French Revolutionary Wars. A troubled and sordid history with the souls of many taken in its defense and destruction.
With the retreating sun, Castle Frankenstein clinging to a rock over-looking the small town with its infamous name, is indeed an ominous sight - not an evening to be out alone! Curiosity however urged me to forge onwards up the hill and after a trek of less than a mile through dense thicket and woodland, the burg appears dominating and impressive on the hilltop, luring its victims like a moth to a street lamp.

Of course what I just wrote, with the exception of the historical bits, is artistic license and imagination. Frankenstein is in fact a uniquely interesting picturesque village, well kept by its proud community. Whether or not Mary Shelley's 1818 novel has any direct connection to this Rheinland-Pfalz village is unknown. Speculation has resulted in a search for a connection between the name and a real place. Mary and her future husband Percy Shelly did in fact travel down the Rhine River in 1816 on their return back to England from Switzerland, and may have visited one of two Frankenstein's along the journey. The craggy nature of the Pfalz Castle Frankenstein ruins clinging to a rock over-looking Frankenstein, could indeed likely provide inspiration for a monsterly novel like Shelley's, as I hope my black and white post-processed images portray. The other Frankenstein Castle in Germany is a ruin at Darmstadt near Frankfurt. It's more accessible than its Rheinland-Pfalz namesake and has all the usual modern tourist trappings, including a vistors centre and restaurant. The 13th century Darmstadt Castle Frankenstein was resurrected in the romantic age of the 1800’s as part of the era’s fascination with gothic and romantic literature and the publishing of Mary Shelley’s novel. Clearly Darmstadt was a step ahead of the tourist wagon!

To put the record straight that the Rheinland-Pfalz Frankenstein is in fact a very nice place and the village and burg well worth a visit (even more so that there's no entrance charge to explore the castle and by nature of not being on the tourist trail , it's a quiet place much appreciated by hikers and nature lovers!), here's some more regularly processed travel shots to whet your appetite:

On the footpath from the village to the castle there's an informative painted map provided by the community, showing a hiking route around the area. However, in lieu of another blog topic, I would like to report to my discerning audience that I won the cover slot on the 2010 MyFourThirds calendar with my image "Floral Divide"!

MyFourThirds.com (affectionately referred to by members as MFT), is a website dedicated to the community of users of Four Thirds photographic equipment; which at this point in time encompasses Olympus and Panasonic cameras. As it's an open standard format, more camera manufacturers may (hopefully) start using the system in the future. A big advantage is that the lenses and cameras are interchangeable across the 4/3rds platform. For example you can use Panasonic lenses on Olympus bodies and vice versa. As both companies make great lenses, Zuiko by Olympus and Leica by Panasonic, the mix and match opportunities are exciting. In case you are wondering what Four Thirds (or 4/3rds) is, well, it is arguably the most ideal digital SLR system. By pursuing the optimum relationship between image sensor size and lens mount size, the Four Thirds system successfully combines higher image quality along with compactness compared to cameras based on the traditional 35mm film size (e.g. Canon, Nikon etc). When the Four Thirds system was designed, special care was taken to avoid the historic problems of the 35mm film format and achieve the optimum balance between high picture quality and compact size, i.e. design a digital system from scratch rather than making do with what had evolved over time for the traditional film camera. The 4/3-type image sensor that resulted from this quest is where the Four Thirds system gets its name.

For those wanting a bit more detail, the foundation for the high picture quality of the Four Thirds system is the lens mount, which is about twice the diameter of the image circle. This extra 'headroom' allows much more freedom in lens design and ensures sharp, clear imaging performance. Despite the compact size of both camera and lens, light still hits the image sensor directly, even on the periphery of the image. This straight light path has made possible a dramatic improvement in image quality. Well, that was all a bit technical and if you really want to read up on the Four Thirds system, check out this dedicated website by clicking here.

While on the bragging streak, just to let you know, I also won two other MFT calendar slots in years gone by:
for the 2009 calendar with my image titled "Dance Symmetry"
With a population of around 53,500 it's main attraction is as a seaside town with an extensive beach (of shingle!), a quaint harbour and cliffs above the beach (The Leas). December is clearly not the time for a usual seaside sortie, but does have the advantage of very few people and free parking even along the beach front! As I was travelling light for business, I didn't have one of my trusty but bulky Olympus SLR cameras, but instead an SP-510UZ point and shoot - Olympus of course, being loyal to the brand! The weather was cold and brisk, but I was treated to quite nice afternoon light, just right for photography. So here goes with a quick series of grab pics that hopefully gives an impression of the town and photo opportunities to be had.

Until the 19th century Folkestone remained a small fishing community with little respite from storms, making boat landings difficult. The harbour was built in 1820, providing a safe haven for boats and trade and the population increased as a result. In the 1840's the South Eastern Railway Company bought the harbour and constructed a rail line down to the pier. The principle use was servicing cross channel steamers plying between Folkestone and Boulogne. In the panorama shot below (stitch of four images), you can clearly see the railway viaduct. Tide was out, but I reckon that adds character to the shot.

[ISO 100, 1/100s, f8; panorama stitched from 4-images using Photomerge in Photoshop CS2]

The major growth of Folkestone occurred between 1848 and 1868 as did its reputation as a seaside resort. Although it is recorded that sea bathing machines were present in Folkestone as early as 1788, it was not until the mid 1800's, with the building of new town facilities and accommodation made possible by the coming of the railway, that sea bathing became a major part of the town's culture and economy. Here's a few more views of the harbour which is probably the most photogenic area I was able to see during my short visit:
I say apparently as I didn't fancy a drink in the middle of the afternoon and no further opportunity to visit since then. If you want to check it out, it's at the junction of Harbour Street and Harbour Approach Road, right next to the harbour (surprise?).
By the end of World War II the town had suffered great damage and was to be changed forever. 123 people were killed, and 778 injured. 550 houses had been destroyed, 10,000 properties damaged, and 37,000 people had left the area.

The picture here shows the remains of Christ Church on Sandgate Road (consecrated in 1850). The Nave and Chancel were hit during an air raid in 1942, leaving just the clock tower intact and preserved as a reminder of darker days.
I wanted to end the blog with a cliche sunset. Unfortunately I had to leave Folkestone before the 'golden hour' but while driving along the A259 I took a quick detour to Hythe and was really lucky to get a break in the clouds and be treated to quite a marvellous sunset. Here's a shot, only one, as I'll probably use the others for a future blog on "20 minutes in Hythe" or whatever title takes my fancy at that time.
Here's the co-ordinates for those initiated in GPS: 40° 29′17″N, 121° 30′18″W. I was certainly not disappointed, spending a good two days in the Park and taking a bucket full of pictures with my trusty old (by digital camera standards) Olympus E-500 camera. To boot, an added bonus was encountering very few people, despite it being peak holiday time in the USA. For this post I focus on one of the features of Lassen Volcanic Park - the Cinder Cone; I'll probably cover some other parts of the Park in future posts. For me this turned out to be an awesome place with a lunar landscape quality and while exploring the cone, didn't see more than a dozen people all day, and three of those were Park Rangers! So here's some pics and narrative of a trip up the Cinder Cone starting at Butte Lake in the northeast of the Park. The round trip is about 4 miles and you need to allow at least 4 hours to take in the scenery and of course grab lots of pictures!
It's a 4-mile round trip, with the first 1.2 miles being easy until you get to the base of the volcano. From then on until you reach the summit it's 700 feet at a steep incline on loose pumice, where, you slide back one step for every two taken! A hiking stick or two is definitely recommended.

Make sure you use ample sun protection. As you can see in my pictures at least in August the skies are pretty much cloud free and there's little to no shade on the Cone. You also kick up a lot of fine dust while walking over the cinder, so do protect your camera equipment and keep lens changes on your SLR to the absolute minimum and preferably don't change the lens at all unless you enjoy cleaning your camera's innards!

Once you reach the top you will not be disappointed, the climb is well worth the effort. The awesome crater of Cinder Cone is 1,000 ft (300 m) in diameter and 230 ft (70 m) deep. There are actually two cones at Cinder Cone—the remnants of a nearly completely buried earlier cone can be seen on the larger cone's south side. Much of the earlier cone was probably destroyed by lava flows erupting from its base.

You are treated to super views from the rim of the crater. In this image you can get a good idea of the scale from the people walking along the rim. In the background you can see Lassen Peak which is still considered an active volcano which last erupted in 1915 and forms part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, stretching from northern California to British Columbia. Lassen rises 2,000 feet (610 m) above the surrounding terrain and according to Wikipedia (cite) has a volume of half a cubic mile, making it one of the largest lava domes on Earth.
The Fantastic Lava Beds viewed below the Cone are the basalt lava flows that occurred after the main eruption that formed the cone and spread northeast and southwest damming creeks to form lakes including Butte Lake. This image shows a view from the top of the Cinder Cone of the Fantastic Lava Beds (black rock centre) with the Painted Dunes in front (bottom left in the image). The Park Ranger taking his lunch break in the shade of the tree gives a nice impression of scale. Fantastic is no under-statement! Snag Lake formed from damming of a river by the lava flow, is seen in the background.

The wonderful colours of the Painted Dunes are the result of oxidised ash formed on falling onto the hot lava flows during the eruptions. Blocks of red, cemented scoria within the Painted Dunes lava flows are pieces of the earlier cone, which were carried away by the flowing lava. The black rock of the Fantastic Lava Bed can be seen in the background.
August is pretty dry in northern Califirnia so the smaller plants that cling to the scree slopes were largely senescing at this time.

Once you are back on flat ground on the trail to Butte Lake you get a close up view of the edge of the Fantastic Lava Beds. I didn't appreciate what this was on the way up, as to me it looked like a huge pile of rocks pushed by a bulldozer! Only from above, when you are on the Cinder Cone do you appreciate the extent of the Beds and realize that the abrupt end to black rock turning to regular soil is where the lava reached its final boundary point and started to cool.
Definitely a memorable day and I hope to return for a longer visit to explore the area in more detail. In particular I would like to be on the Cone at sunrise and/or sunset rather than the midday foray documented here.
